Semuliki and the Sempaya Hot Springs
Central African rainforest, and water that comes out boiling.
The Congo basin,
without leaving Uganda.
Semuliki is the only piece of true Congolian lowland rainforest in East Africa, which is why its bird list contains species you otherwise have to cross into the Congo basin to see. At Sempaya, water surfaces at over 100 degrees and throws a plume two metres high.
Semuliki is an outlier. The Ituri forest of the Congo basin reaches east and stops just inside Uganda, and this 220 square kilometre park is where it stops. The result is a bird list of 441 species, a large number of which cannot be seen anywhere else in East Africa, and a forest that feels and smells different from Kibale an hour and a half away.
Sempaya is the other reason people come. Two groups of hot springs, the male and the female in local naming, where water surfaces at over 100 degrees. The larger throws a plume about two metres high and the guides boil eggs in it in about ten minutes, which sounds like a gimmick and is genuinely startling to stand next to.
It is 90 minutes from Fort Portal, so it works as a day out from the crater lakes without moving lodges. For a birder it is worth a night of its own and two full mornings.

The Sempaya springs
Two groups of springs reached on a boardwalk through forest, the larger throwing a plume about two metres high.
Stay behind the rail. The water is genuinely boiling.
The Kirumia trail
A long forest trail to the Semuliki river, and the best access to the Congolian specials.
A full day, flat, and hot. Start at first light.
The Batwa communities
Forest communities living on the park edge, visited by prior arrangement with terms agreed beforehand.
Never a drive-by. If it cannot be done properly it is not done.
The year in Semuliki and the Sempaya Hot Springs
The long dry season
Firm trails, short grass and predictable roads. The busiest stretch of the year and the easiest walking.
Gorilla permits for these months sell out first, so they are booked before flights rather than after.
The short rains
Rain arrives in the afternoon and rarely lasts the day. Green country, few vehicles.
November carries the USD 600 gorilla permit. If your dates move, this is the best value in the calendar.
The second dry season
Hot and clear. Busy over Christmas and the new year, then quiet through January and February.
February is the driest month in the south and the strongest window for the Rwenzori.
The long rains
The wettest stretch. Harder underfoot, some northern tracks go difficult, a few lodges close.
April and May carry the USD 600 permit, birding peaks, and you will have the forest very nearly to yourself.
