Wellness Travel

Hot springs and crater lakes in western Uganda, as quiet days inside a longer safari.

East Africa has hot springs, crater lakes and quiet highland lakes for rest days between the parks: the Sempaya hot springs in Semuliki, dozens of crater lakes south of Fort Portal for walking rather than swimming, and Lake Bunyonyi after the gorilla forests.

The restorative part of a safari is the part easiest to cut. Built deliberately, the stopping is the trip: two nights in the Ndali-Kasenda crater field south of Fort Portal, where the walking between the lakes is flat and we stay out of the water. The Sempaya hot springs in Semuliki. Lake Bunyonyi at 1,973 metres, cool at night, enjoyed from a canoe or a deck.
Add what the lodges already do well. Massage with the crater lake below you. Guided forest walks rather than a gym. Food grown within a few kilometres of the plate. Nights with no light to switch off.

What that means in practice

  • The Ndali-Kasenda crater lakes south of Fort Portal, for flat walks between the craters
  • The Sempaya hot springs in Semuliki
  • Lake Bunyonyi at 1,973 metres, where the nights are cool
  • Built as two unhurried nights inside a longer trip, not as a retreat
