Wellness Travel
Hot springs, crater lakes and the one week nobody schedules.
East Africa is not thought of as a wellness destination, which is strange, because it has the raw material and almost nobody is using it. Water that surfaces above 100 degrees. Sixty crater lakes you can swim in. Forest at 2,300 metres where the only sound is colobus.
The restorative part of a safari is usually the part that gets cut. Most itineraries run hard, and people spend the flight home wishing they had stopped somewhere. Built deliberately, the stopping is the trip: two nights in the Ndali-Kasenda crater field above Fort Portal, where the lakes have no bilharzia, no crocodile and no hippo and the walking between them is flat. Sempaya in Semuliki, where the springs break the surface boiling. Lake Bunyonyi at 1,962 metres, cold enough that there are no mosquitoes and nothing in the water that bites.
Add what the lodges already do well. Massage with the crater lake below you. Guided forest walks rather than a gym. Food grown within a few kilometres of the plate. Nights with no light to switch off.
What that means in practice
- The Ndali-Kasenda crater lakes, swimmable and an hour's flat walk apart
- Sempaya hot springs in Semuliki, over 100 degrees at the surface
- Lake Bunyonyi at 1,962 metres, no bilharzia and no mosquitoes
- Built as two unhurried nights inside a longer trip, not as a retreat
