Walking and Hiking Safaris

Glaciers on the equator, and a volcano you can climb before breakfast.

East Africa walks better than it is given credit for. The Rwenzori carry permanent ice thirty kilometres from the equator and see a few hundred climbers a year, against roughly thirty-five thousand on Kilimanjaro.

The Rwenzori central circuit is seven to nine days through five vegetation zones, and the part people underestimate is not the altitude but the bog. The lower valleys give you the giant lobelia and the moss forest in two to four days with no technical ground at all, and almost nobody does that either.
Beyond them: Kilimanjaro and the Ngorongoro highlands in Tanzania, Mount Elgon’s caldera from Sipi, the volcanoes of Mgahinga and Virunga, and walking safaris in the conservancies beside the Mara where going on foot is actually permitted.

What that means in practice

  • Rwenzori: seven to nine days to Margherita, or two to four in the valleys
  • Margherita needs rope, crampons and an ice axe. Say early if that is new
  • Kilimanjaro, Mount Elgon, Mgahinga and the Virunga volcanoes
  • Walking safaris in the Mara conservancies, where it is allowed
