Bird Watching Safaris
The shoebill, and the swamp you have to get up early for.
Uganda is one of the strongest birding countries in Africa for its size, because the Albertine Rift, the edge of the Congo basin and the East African savanna all meet inside it. Over a thousand species have been recorded.
The bird most people come for is the shoebill, and seeing one is a logistics problem rather than a luck problem. Mabamba swamp on Lake Victoria is a dugout canoe at first light and the most reliable site in the country. Murchison’s delta and the Semliki flats hold them too.
Beyond that: the Albertine Rift endemics at Mubwindi swamp on the Bwindi road, Kibale for green-breasted pitta in the breeding months, the Kazinga channel in Queen Elizabeth for a day of water birds without walking far, and Semuliki for Congo basin species that reach almost nowhere else in East Africa.
What that means in practice
- Mabamba swamp at first light for shoebill, by dugout canoe
- Albertine Rift endemics at Mubwindi swamp on the Bwindi road
- Semuliki for Congo basin species that barely reach the rest of East Africa
- Guides who bird, a scope in the vehicle, and a pace built for stopping
