Big Five Safaris

Lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino, and where each one actually is.

The Big Five were named by hunters for the animals hardest to take on foot. They are now the shorthand for a first safari, and East Africa holds all five, though not all of them in one park.

Rhino is the one that decides the route. Uganda’s are at the Ziwa sanctuary rather than in a national park, Kenya holds both black and white rhino in the Mara conservancies and Laikipia, and Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania is the most reliable black rhino sighting in the region. Everything else is a question of season and patience.
Leopard is the one nobody can promise. Lion, elephant and buffalo are near certain across a week in the right parks. Anyone who guarantees you five in three days is selling something that is not theirs to sell.

What that means in practice

  • Queen Elizabeth and Murchison in Uganda, the Mara, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro
  • Rhino needs Ziwa, Laikipia or the crater, and that shapes the route
  • Early mornings do most of the work on a game drive
  • A week gives you a real chance at all five, three days does not
