Family Safaris

Built around the youngest person travelling, not around the itinerary.

A family safari lives or dies on drive lengths and on what there is to do at four in the afternoon. Both are planning decisions, and both get made before the route is fixed.

The hard rule to know early: the minimum age for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking is 15, enforced at the park gate, and no operator can arrange an exception. Everything else in East Africa is open to children, including the boat on the Kazinga Channel, the Nile at Jinja and every savanna park.
What usually makes the difference is fewer moves and longer stays. Two nights minimum everywhere, a lodge with water, and an afternoon with nothing in it. Private departures mean nobody else is waiting in the vehicle while a four-year-old has a moment.

What that means in practice

  • Gorilla and chimpanzee trekking is 15 and over, with no exceptions
  • Boat cruises, rafting and the savanna parks take all ages
  • Family rooms and interconnecting tents are asked for at the start
  • Shorter drives, longer stays, and an afternoon with nothing scheduled
