Arts and Culture

The parts of the day that are not about animals.

A safari that is only animals leaves out most of where you are. The cultural half of East Africa is easy to reach and almost always rushed, usually because it was added at the end rather than planned in.

Kampala carries the Uganda Museum, the Kasubi tombs and a live music scene that starts late and is worth staying up for. Kigali has the Genocide Memorial, which is difficult and which almost everyone who goes says they were right to go to, and a design and coffee culture that has grown up around it. Stone Town you can walk in an afternoon and spend a week in.
Closer to the parks: the Batwa trail at Mgahinga, led by people who lived in that forest. Weavers around Lake Bunyonyi. Fishermen launching sailed boats on Lake Victoria at first light. These are half days rather than add-ons, and they want a guide who knows the family rather than a scheduled stop.

What that means in practice

  • Kampala: the Uganda Museum, the Kasubi tombs, live music worth a late night
  • Kigali: the Genocide Memorial, and the design and coffee culture around it
  • The Batwa trail at Mgahinga, led by people from that forest
  • Stone Town, walkable in an afternoon and worth considerably longer
