Kidepo Valley

Seven hundred kilometres from Kampala, and worth every one.

Why Kidepo

You can spend a morning here
without meeting another vehicle.

Kidepo sits in the far north east against the South Sudan border, ringed by mountains, with species that exist nowhere else in Uganda: cheetah, ostrich, greater and lesser kudu. It takes a flight or two long days to reach, which is exactly why it is empty.

Kidepo is 1,442 square kilometres of savanna in the far north east, hemmed by the Morungole range and running to the South Sudan border. It receives a small fraction of the visitors Queen Elizabeth does, and the difference is not subtle: you will regularly be the only vehicle in the valley.

It also holds animals you will not see anywhere else in the country. Cheetah, ostrich, greater and lesser kudu, and Guenther's dik-dik are Kidepo species. The herd structure is different too, with buffalo moving in numbers that no longer happen further south.

The honest part is the journey. It is two hard days by road from Kampala, or a charter flight. Either way you are committing three nights and real money to get here, and it only makes sense on a longer trip or for someone who has done the standard circuit and wants the opposite of it.

Where to go

The places worth the drive

Where the game is

The Narus valley

The southern valley holds water through the dry season, so the animals concentrate here.

Lion on the rocks, buffalo in numbers, and the best chance of cheetah.

Sand river and borassus

The Kidepo valley

Drier and starker, running to the Sudan border, with a seasonal sand river and borassus palms.

Ostrich country, and the emptiest driving in Uganda.

A manyatta visit

The Karamojong

Pastoralist communities living around the park, visited properly rather than as a photo stop.

Arranged in advance, and the fee is agreed before you arrive.

When to go

The year in Kidepo Valley

June to September

The long dry season

Firm trails, short grass and predictable roads. The busiest stretch of the year and the easiest walking.

Gorilla permits for these months sell out first, so they are booked before flights rather than after.

October and November

The short rains

Rain arrives in the afternoon and rarely lasts the day. Green country, few vehicles.

November carries the USD 600 gorilla permit. If your dates move, this is the best value in the calendar.

December to February

The second dry season

Hot and clear. Busy over Christmas and the new year, then quiet through January and February.

February is the driest month in the south and the strongest window for the Rwenzori.

March to May

The long rains

The wettest stretch. Harder underfoot, some northern tracks go difficult, a few lodges close.

April and May carry the USD 600 permit, birding peaks, and you will have the forest very nearly to yourself.

Before you go

What we tell everyone about Kidepo

01
Flying is not a luxury here, it is the sensible option. Two days of road each way out of a two week trip is four days of your holiday.
02
Three nights minimum. Having spent what it costs to get here, two nights means one full day, and that is not enough.
03
September to March is the window. The access roads in the wet are genuinely difficult and some become impassable.
04
Lodging is limited, which is part of why it stays empty. It has to be booked a long way ahead in high season.
