Safaris

Chimpanzee and Primate Safaris

Thirteen primate species in one Ugandan forest, and chimpanzees you will actually see.

Kibale holds the highest density of primates in East Africa and its chimpanzee communities have been habituated for decades. Sightings on the standard trek run above 90 per cent, which is a different proposition from chimpanzee tracking almost anywhere else.

There are two ways to do it. The standard trek is an hour with a community once the trackers have found them. The habituation experience takes you out at dawn with the researchers and keeps you with the group most of the day, while they come down from their night nests, feed, move, groom and argue. You see chimpanzee behaviour rather than chimpanzees.
Beyond Kibale there is the Kyambura gorge in Queen Elizabeth, where the community is small and isolated and sightings are much less certain, and Nyungwe in Rwanda for chimpanzees and a very large colobus troop.

What that means in practice

  • Kibale for the reliable tracking and the full-day habituation
  • Habituation places are limited and go months ahead
  • Minimum age 15, the same as gorilla trekking
  • Bring binoculars. Chimpanzees are fast, loud and high up
