Great Migration Safaris

Where the herds are depends entirely on the month you can travel.

Around two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle move in a loop between the Serengeti and the Maasai Mara. The loop never stops, so there is no off season, only a different part of it.

The river crossings people picture are roughly July to October, on the Mara River between the northern Serengeti and the Mara. That is the most dramatic window and the most heavily booked. Calving is January and February on the southern Serengeti plains, when a few hundred thousand calves are born inside about three weeks, and the predator density is the highest of the year.
Nobody controls the herds and nobody can promise a crossing on a given day. What a route can do is put you in the right third of the ecosystem for your dates and keep you there long enough to be lucky.

What that means in practice

  • July to October for the Mara River crossings
  • January and February for calving on the southern Serengeti
  • Conservancies beside the Mara cap vehicle numbers and allow night drives
  • Three nights minimum in the right place beats a week in the wrong one
